3 Simple (But Effective) Pieces Of Advice I’d Give Anyone Starting in Online Course Building
These ideas can save you months of wasted effort
Hi,
This week’s newsletter contains two items.
A short update about what I’m up to.
Article: 3 Simple (But Effective) Pieces Of Advice I’d Give Anyone Starting in Online Course Building
Let’s get started.
Update
These past couple of weeks have been a whirlwind. I delivered a workshop during the Second Brain Summit last week.
I showed how to use Tiago Forte’s PARA system to organize bookmarks.
And I’m happy to say it was received well. Here’s some feedback I got that day:
I was a bit surprised as I’d gotten so used to the system that I forgot how useful it might be to others.
On Monday I delivered a bonus online workshop for early buyers of the Atomic Course Blueprint called “How To Hook Readers With Story Problems.” It’s the most time I’ve spent on a presentation in a few years.
It worked, as each person was able to compose an effective story to hook readers on their content by the end. And I got great feedback from that one too.
I will also be co-facilitating the second session in Tiago Forte’s course Building A Second Brain with Maria Aldrey on April 12 and April 13th.
After that I’ll be able to relax for a bit before the next challenge.
Wish me luck.
Now for the promised article.
3 Simple (But Effective) Pieces Of Advice I’d Give Anyone Starting in Online Course Building
In 12 years of creating online courses, I’ve found these 3 simple (but effective) pieces of advice helpful to anyone who wants to get started.
Advice #1: Start small
Don't aim to create a planet-sized course. That's a recipe for procrastination. Build an atomic course you can assemble in a few weeks.
Advice #2: Create from experience (not research)
People want your battle-tested wisdom, not a research paper. Tell them what YOU did and how YOU did it. That way you can show them how to do it too.
Advice #3: Find a problem
Don't sell a course to teach a topic. Sell a course that solves a problem. Figure out the problem, then aim the course like a laser to solve it.
I created my Atomic Course Blueprint to show you how to break through the overwhelm of course creation so you can build a tiny course that delivers high value.
